Background
For the launch of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S23 series, we were asked to showcase the Galaxy S23 Ultra as a pro-grade camera made for everyone, highlighting it’s capabilities of filming in low-light conditions.
The project aimed to create content that would showcase the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera capabilities at night by collaborating with a renowned film director Na Hong-jin, who is known for his unique mise-en-scène utilizing dark images and suspense elements, to create a short film shot entirely with our product in a dark environment.
Execution
Given the tight deadline for the film's release alongside the product launch, we were left with only a brief three-month period to produce the movie from scratch which is considerably shorter than the year-long production cycle we typically follow.
Despite the short window, it was crucial for us to pay attention to even the smallest details of the set design to showcase the product's capabilities through the smartphone camera lenses considering the nature of smartphones that everything, including the small objects in background, is in focus.
As smartphone cameras in low-light conditions tend to brighten up everything beyond what the naked eye can see. We conducted tests for over 90 days on lighting setups and camera settings to determine the best approach that would better suit the director's original intentions and effectively showcase the product's capabilities.
