OVERVIEW

Background

Fiat believes that the best way to fight gender inequality is through soccer.

On the other hand, Brazilians are deeply passionate about soccer and cars. This mix inspired Fiat to sponsor all of the National Soccer Teams, especially the women's, which has never received the recognition they deserve - not even by Google.

Idea

When searching for the first Brazilian woman to score a goal in international soccer competitions, the results showed only the first male goal (by Preguinho). To change this unfair result, we created a thrilling mini-documentary that reveals the true historic goal and its author: Elane dos Santos.

Strategy

Information about women's soccer in Brazil is still very scarce, which is why we did extensive research on the print media of the time (1991) and interviewed some of the athletes from the 1991 National Team.

Our target audience isn't just women, but also men who believe that soccer is equated with a male universe. In a way, the "Forgotten Goal" project is a message to all of Brazilian society, which is still fighting its structural racism.

With the mini-documentary, we told Elane's story in a very real and moving way, with tones of nostalgia and historic amends.

Execution

We recreated this historic moment using statements by Elane and pictures from when she played.

Then we invited Alê Xavier, hostess of one of the most popular channels on soccer in the world, Desimpedidos, to play former athlete Elane. We recreated this historic moment using statements by Elane and pictures from when she played.

The documentary was shot at Granja Comary, the National Team's main training center.

Outcome

Forgotten Goal started a positive and effective conversation around gender equality:

•72% positive feedback

•Over 13,000,000 people reached

•Over 25,000,000 impressions

The premiere night for the mini documentary was a success: over 13,000 fans went to Pacaembu stadium, one of the most important in the country, to watch and cheer the story of Elane dos Santos.

"Forgotten Goal" was covered by SporTV, the cable sports channel with the largest audience in Brazil, and was featured on Quebrando o Tabu ("breaking the taboo")

And most importantly: we successfully hacked the machismo and changed the results on search engines.
