Description
The idea of the film is to compare the time the average child spends outdoors with that of a prison inmate.
To bring this to life, we visited a high security prison in Indiana to film inmates and ask them what their outdoor time meant to them. We see footage of them working out, playing basketball and enjoying the fresh air. We hear from them, in their own words, about how important and precious their outdoor time is to them, and why.
We then pose the question to the inmates of how they would feel if their outdoor time was cut to only one hour a day. Their reactions show surprise, anger and worry.
We then revealed that kids currently only get one hour outdoors per day, and filmed their reactions. Because they truly understand what it means to have free time outside, they were shocked by this statistic.
Execution
There are around 2000 inmates at Wabash Correctional Facility in Indiana.
We spoke to, filmed, and received signed release forms for 64 Individuals
We filmed full interviews with 26 individuals at the Prison.
Between our documentary researcher, the Director and producer, we reviewed and considered almost every prisoner.
The Prison allowed us access to advance search their database of Prisoners for a brief profile, crime, headshot, DOC number.
We broke out a long list that we shared with agency/client as an example of the type of people we could be interviewing.
The Prison had agreed permission for filming within the Facility and we had negotiated good access to the compound.
However, the participation of the inmates and their agreement for us to interview or film with them was always an agreement we had to make between ourselves and the individuals once we arrived. The same for the Prison staff.
