OVERVIEW

Idea

Sprint’s “Futbol Mode” helped fans never a miss a moment of the World Cup in Russia. By accessing the “Futbol Mode” channel within the Telemundo Deportes app no matter where they were, fans got a series of hacks to help them watch the games throughout a typical day and not get caught. From fake appointments that get automatically put on their calendars to email play-by-plays for when the boss was nearby, fans could finally watch the game via Sprint’s lightning fast network no matter what time it was. And best of all, not get caught in the act.

Strategy

Sprint telecom has fast, reliable service. That means you’ll never miss a key moment on your phone. To demonstrate this, we needed to bring a mobile experience to futbol fans during the summer’s biggest event -- one that would enable fans to never miss a moment as the games were being played a half a world away.

Execution

Leading up into the World Cup, the “Futbol Mode” channel within the Telemundo Deportes App allowed fans to get ready for the games via innovative hacks, such as the calendar blocker. This feature allowed fans to block their calendar based on the schedule of their favorite team, all with one easy click.

During the tournament, mobile hacks related to the live games were added, such as the email play-by-play and “excusemaker”, or automated phone call that would help get fans out of a meeting or other commitment.

In addition, fans were served a mix of FIFA content and an original branded content series, “Fan en Futbol Mode”, a mobile-first series that brought the World Cup experience – from the beauty of the host country to the exhilarating experience of being in the stadium - to the fans in the western hemisphere. Timeline: March 2018 – July

Outcome

Telemundo Deportes’ digital presentation of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia generated a record-setting 130 million livestreams and 1.96 billion live minutes viewed – which makes Telemundo’s 2018 World Cup the biggest livestream sports event in Spanish-language history. Telemundo Deportes also delivered the 50 most-livestreamed games in Spanish language history.
