Description

In a word: Tattoos. We gave people a way to create their own temporary tattoos using the Galaxy Note8, with a custom mobile web app designed specifically for the device.

Designing the web app specifically for the S Pen made the Note8 a vital and integral part of the experience. Users chose from a wide variety of colors and brushes, and the device’s large screen became a palette for them to express themselves through illustration.

Their drawings were printed as temporary tattoos, allowing them to show off their art in a highly personal but public way. Designs were added to a digital gallery, giving others inspiration for their own creations.

The experience launched during Wanderlust, the world renowned arts and yoga festival known for its free-spirited, expressive audience. An audience that couldn’t be more different - or more perfect - than the one typically interested the Galaxy Note.

Execution

Everything was designed around the aesthetic, habits, and lifestyle of our target audience. Raw, natural materials and bright, airy surroundings helped our physical installation become part of the larger festival. Illustration style and color palette represented a blend of tattoo and yoga culture.

At the center was a mobile experience developed specifically for the S Pen on the Galaxy Note8. The Progressive Web App was built in Vue.js, Paper.js, Webpack, and HTML/ES6/SASS. The modern Web APIs calculated pressure and tilt to provide a precise, ultra-realistic drawing experience on HTML5 Canvas elements. We also built custom brush types, color palettes, and gallery viewers.

To deliver a true app experience via the web, we also handled post processing events on the backend to save and print to spec, as well as included full screen mode and orientation lock.

Initial development through testing to launch took just over 3 weeks.

Outcome

Fresh Ink was a huge hit among the artistic, creative crowd at the Wanderlust festival. More than 25% of all festival attendees interacted with the experience, with overwhelmingly positive social sentiment. Over 90% of the tattoos created were applied right there on-site, giving us a huge organic presence throughout the festival.

But the biggest success? Brand Perception for Samsung rose by 92%, and Purchase Intent for the Galaxy Note8 rose by a whopping 80% among our target audience at the event. We successfully won over an entirely new consumer base for a device that desperately needed a fresh new audience.
