Background

Game Revealed, Season 8, is a Behind the Scenes series that allows the audience an inside look into how one of the most historically ambitious seasons of television was created – Game of Thrones, The Final Season. The series reveals the how and why of Season 8, from visual effects to set design, to more intimate moments such as cast reunions. To achieve this the HBO crew was on set for over 100 days, 40 of them night shoots in freezing conditions.

Idea

The idea behind Game Reveled was to create a unique Behind the Scenes experience where the audience would get a sense of excitement and anticipation when watching. The creative had to stay true to the Game of Thrones and the HBO brand by being of high quality and distinguished work, but it also needed to take a step outside the box and have a fun and fresh approach. By using music and editing styles not associated with Game of Thrones, and by capturing fun, candid moments with our cast and crew, Game Revealed is not just a mainstream ‘Making Of’, but entertainment in its own right! It was also vital that it felt like a cohesive series. Consequently, music and graphics played an important role when tying the series together and making it feel unified.

Strategy

The main strategy behind Game Revealed was to stray away from a typical 'Making of' series – we wanted Game Revealed to be accessible to everyone, particularly the younger casual viewers and not just die-hard fans which 'Making of’s' are usually reserved for. It needed to be modern, fun and entertaining, while still being informative, showcasing the work that went into making the series. This required being on set for most of the series and capturing those canid moments with the cast and crew, while allowing room for play when in the cutting room.

Execution

The scale of Game of Thrones, Season 8 was immense and therefore Game Revealed had to match. The HBO crew were on set for over 100 days which spread across a 6-month period and had around three months to cut all five episodes. While filming, it was essential to get a wide range of footage, from what was occurring on set to what was happening in the workshops. It was necessary to follow and develop captivating storylines on the ground while making sure there was adequate coverage. Our shooting style remained flexible and used both an on the fly documentary approach paired with a more formal, stylistic approach for interviews. For these interviews, we adopted a conversational method, which allowed the talent to open up and be more relatable on screen. When editing, we wanted to take a fun approach leading to creative decisions behind music, pacing and graphics.

Outcome

Game Revealed, Season 8 was watched by fans on a worldwide scale. It had tens of millions of views on social media and was also viewed on HBO on-demand platforms. It generated mass excitement and conversation among viewers, sparking fan-based conversations about the season.
