OVERVIEW

Description

Greg Brunkalla set out to create a film that takes us into the world of Neil Harbisson. Neil is a completely colorblind cyborg that lives in New York City. Neil invented an antenna that converts color into sound and had it surgically implanted into the back of his head. There have been several articles and coverage of Neil and his device over the years, so Greg wanted to take a different approach to this story and tell a more personal narrative. In the film we see and hear what it’s like from Neil's perceptive. We learn about him and his new sense in a film that is a collaboration between a cyborg and a filmmaker. Because Neil’s eyes see the world in black and white, the film enters that world with him.Yes a film about color that’s in black and white.

Execution

Each filmmaker was given a great amount of freedom to pitch concepts that could fit this series. There were no restrictions for type of genre and product placement was not a requirement. Through close collaboration with Samsung/Edelman and Vimeo, ten films were created and launched through each individual filmmaker’s Vimeo account. The entire series was distributed through a hub on Tumblr. Four of the films were independently selected for Vimeo’s coveted Staff Pick awards, and Greg Brunkalla’s film, Hearing Colors, went on to win the inaugural Tribeca X Award.

Outcome

Greg Brunkalla's Hearing Colors won the inaugural Tribeca X award, representing Samsung's Connected Series. Additionally, the film was a Staff Pick on Vimeo and was featured on a number of popular websites last August, such as Upworthy and io9.
