Background

HEINZ REMIX debuted in at the National Restaurant Association Show in May 2023 after intense development using our agile disruptive innovation approach and entered restaurants in Q1 2024. Touchscreen enabled, HEINZ REMIX offers consumers the ability to customize their personal sauce from 200+ possibilities, dramatically transforming how people consume sauces in restaurants. Its design addressed challenges such as pumping highly viscous sauces, solved with a peristaltic pump design. As well, HEINZ REMIX is designed to prevent cross-contamination when mixing sauces, by using vortex technology to mix them in a sustainable cup to achieve the perfect blend in seconds. A huge step forward from sachets.

HEINZ REMIX serves as a mobile R&D hub in every location and a real-time insights engine for how consumers eat. Its cloud-based consumer interface allows for real-time data collection, including consumer consumptions and mix preferences, as well as operating information for the machine itself.

Idea

Consumers demand personalization and customization. 62% say the ability to personalize their order is important when visiting restaurants. Consumer interviews told us that “host foods can be boring and enhancing flavor can make it more interesting”. Dips & sauces are the tool that they use to elevate their meals. 59% of restaurant operators say that consumers are demanding more unique sauces, and more than half of consumers are more likely to try new offerings from brands they know.

Conceived as a cloud-enabled consumer-facing machine that puts an R&D lab in each restaurant, HEINZ REMIX is revolutionizing sauce personalization, empowering consumers to experiment with and create personalized sauces. Leveraging real-time insights, HEINZ REMIX produces continuous feedback on consumption, trends, and consumer liking to feed our retail and foodservice innovation pipeline. This real-time data gives operators the opportunity to offer a differentiated experience and a way to drive traffic to their businesses.

Strategy

HEINZ REMIX contributes to a more consumer-centric foodservice industry while changing the way Kraft Heinz creates value. Beyond product innovation, REMIX redefines the category, its formats and how it interacts within the foodservice ecosystem, which helped to fuel its PR success at its reveal in the 2023 NRA show which generated 1,258 placements and 2.2B+ earned media impressions.

This new business model will allow us to penetrate unexplored whitespace in foodservice with a potential to generate an incremental +$1 billion globally, transforming how consumers and operators experience HEINZ away from home.

In market since March 2024, HEINZ REMIX already surpassed its forecast number of estimated servings by 40% within its first week. This reinforces our expectations of driving return users, incremental store traffic, restaurant loyalty, and an overall bigger business for restaurants as we scale HEINZ REMIX to over 10,000 locations in 2025 and beyond.

Execution

HEINZ REMIX enables consumers to create customizable sauce combinations made up of four core base sauces (Ketchup, Mayo, Ranch, and Barbecue) and four flavor enhancers (Jalapeno, Smokey Chipotle, Buffalo, and Mango) that can each be set to a consumer’s preferred intensity (low, medium, high). Consumers make their selections on an engaging touch-screen interface, capable of live cloud-first updates. After selecting, consumers are directed to place a cup on the machine’s cup holder. The sauces are then pumped into the cup from sauce bags using a peristaltic pump system fit with a dispensing head. Using Vortex technology, the cup starts spinning to mix the selected sauces as they are poured right in front of the consumers eyes. IoT enabled, and outfitted with mobile connectivity, the machine’s data related to the entirety of the consumer’s choices, experience, and the machine’s operations is then shared with Kraft Heinz and the foodservice operator in real-time, which can then be analyzed to inform future decision-making.

Heinz Remix debuted at the National Restaurant Show in May 2023 and entered restaurants in Q1 2024.
