Execution

The immersive, interactive online ad invites users to “Drag to the Future,” where the TV commercial is played, and then expanded upon.

In the commercial, viewers hear the voice of science fiction author and futurist, Arthur C. Clarke, speaking in 1964 about the “absolutely fantastic” future that awaits. The spot ends with the reveal of the BMW i8 and the words, “Hello Future.”

Clarke’s words then come to life as users explore the vehicles to see how these new, groundbreaking vehicles will change the automotive industry and prove the future is as fantastic as he predicted.

Outcome

With more than 92 million impressions, the banner created the desired awareness of BMW i. The expansion rate doubled msn.com’s automotive benchmark and users interacted with the banner for an average of 60 seconds, which far exceeded the benchmark of 34 seconds.

Success of BMW’s desire to create awareness was exemplified by a 113% increase in searches (over the month prior) on the day of the ad for BMW i.
