OVERVIEW

Description

The court is now your coach. Nike Hyper Court are basketball courts around Manila which have been revamped to provide better training and experience for neighbourhood ballers.

Each of the five Courts features a mural of a basketball star. Elements of the artwork are designed and positioned using actual player data—clovers where Kyrie makes 90% of his jump shots, explosions on the 5 spots where KD isolates, lightning where LeBron leapt for his iconic block. Art that trains you to be better at your game.

Visitors to the Courts are also able to unlock exclusive basketball training drills served directly to their phones. Hyper-personalized, these drills are based on the playing styles of the three biggest players in basketball. Powered by the latest technology, they all stream in Full-HD and are 100% data-free. This provides invaluable training to thousands of Filipino ballers and raises the game on the street.

Execution

We transformed 5 courts across Manila into Hyper Courts. Kids in the city use decade old phones without much storage or good connectivity, so we created a mobile web app using tech that streams HD content without buffer and doesn’t require data or installation.

The app has 25 training drills based on the styles of 3 NBA players. We use a machine-learning algorithm for the drills, a chat-bot recommends training programs to the user based on skill level, and allows them to pick up where they left off in a previous session. Users get badges after completing a program.

Illustrated by Arturo Torres, the artwork is designed using actual player data—clovers where Kyrie makes 90% of his jump shots. Explosions mark the 5 spots where KD isolates. Lightning bolts where LeBron leapt for his iconic block.

The process took 9 months of planning and 2 months of execution.

Outcome

On our first 5 Hyper Courts and counting, we’ve had 37,000 ballers train, with 20% of them coming back weekly. With over 40% of our users being female, we are serving a gap in the market as girls don’t get access to basketball training and are truly growing the game. With more Hyper Courts planned across Philippines, Nike doesn’t just want to create the future of training, but train the future.
