Background

Hyundai presents its first purpose-built all-electric car : Ioniq 5, a flagship next generation vehicle, inspired by the fast, future and present.

Designed for people with a modern mindset, innovative and determined, just like the Hyundai philosophy, to embrace dreams, innovation, evolution and striving to get the most out of life.

To challenge disbelievers. To encourage everyone to trust their dreams.

To change the world for the better, to follow their ambitions and create a world of possibility.

Depicting a vision of progression and innovation, just like the humble origins of Hyundai's founder, Chung Ju-Yung, started working as a rice delivery boy before getting into mechanics and set up a car repair service.

A renowned eternal optimist (dreamer), he was determined to change the future and build a legacy.

Those visions became Hyundai (meaning modern times).

Execution

Creating the transitionary effects of the older Hyundai Excel into the modern IONIQ 5 model presented a unique set of VFX challenges, requiring multiple layers of complex CG simulations to represent the different materials transforming:

Duco paint flaking into the breeze, crinkling sheet metal peeling like aluminium foil, seats unstitching themselves thread by thread, dashboard vinyl shrivelling away, the car body morphing.

Each element required multiple iterations of look development to find the right visual signature for its motion.

The dirt road and surrounding landscape required extensive digital alterations to maintain a consistent shot appearance - requiring 3d vegetation to cover up swathes of barren patches.

A large cloud of desert CG dust behind the car cruising the outback was added to lend an epic feel to the hero car’s evolution.

With almost no two shots containing the same visual effects recipe, this spot stretched traditional VFX artistry.
