Description
On behalf of the United Nations, international musicians turn the sounds icebergs produce while melting into songs – the Iceberg Songs. On our interactive website, we stage them in an innovative way. By creating an audiovisual experience with the icebergs, we move them from the arctic right into peoples’ minds and souls. With this inspired approach, we make it possible for people to access this huge topic, and to relate to the issue emotionally.
Execution
Arctic scientists recorded the acoustic signals of melting icebergs by using special underwater microphones. On our website, we provided these natural sounds for anyone to download, compose and remix. Every artist integrated the sounds of the melting icebergs individually und gave his song a personal handwriting. We collected a wide range of different genres–from electronic music to classic. On our interactive website, icebergsongs.com, we merged the songs with moving 360° images in dramatic, dark tonality. Thanks to innovative WebGL technology, users get the impression of moving among icebergs while they listen to them, gaining a first hand feeling of what is happening in the far away arctic. The longer users listened to the songs, the more time was being collected. This amount of time can be shared in social media channels to show everyone’s personal commitment to the world.
Outcome
More than 15.000 visitors have been registered on our website. They responded to our message by listening to the Iceberg Songs for over 1000 hours. We list Facebook fans from 45 different countries. Besides our owned media channels, we also created a worldwide echo in the media – without spending a single Euro. From science magazines and children’s news programs on TV to leading daily newspapers, magazines and radio stations – our message was heard worldwide.
Instead of signing a petition in a second, people all over the world created a symbol of commitment, much bigger than a signature, but still in their unique handwriting.
