Background

To celebrate the end of the longest running production car in the world, the Series Land Rover and Defender, the global PR team at Land Rover commissioned us to create a unique coffee-table book featuring engaging and rarely seen photography.

They wanted our photo selection to explore how the Defender opened-up a world of adventure for everyone who owned it.

Considering the number of iterations in daily life and the fact it had been exported all over the world for nearly 70 years, we soon discovered that the main challenge was not what to put in, but what to leave out!

The client said: “More than a final farewell, the book needs to raise brand awareness by capturing the vehicle’s (and indeed Land Rover’s) original reason for being. It must be informative, impactful and exciting, appealing to both traditionalists and new prospects.”

Execution

To make this different to every other Defender book on sale, ICON focuses on incredible stories about people and how it touched their lives. Over 204 pages there’s a foreword by Top Gear and Grand Tour star and lifelong Defender enthusiast Richard Hammond; 200 photographs, 75 of which are completely original; 80 individual stories about adventure, sacrifice and unexplainable passion; bespoke illustrations; a unique hand-drawn font; three different paper stocks and a bright Pantone orange colour that echoes the famous Defender G4 Challenge vehicles and gives the book maximum stand out. And finally, it’s called ICON because, well, that’s exactly what it is.
