Background
In the last 5 years, 427 hundred children have witnessed a case of domestic violence, in Italy alone. The so called “witnessed violence” is itself a kind of violence, that causes dramatic problems to the children who suffer from it.
However, the problem is underestimated, undeclared and so the medias are not interested in spreading this message.
Idea
“Witnessed violence” is a problem that gets deep inside the victims, right into their bones, never leaving them again. An undeclared violence that hides between the walls of the family home. That’s why we decided to break this barrier to let people enter the room of a young victim and feel inside their bones what does it mean to live every day in that kind of situation.
Strategy
Our objective was to hit two different targets: people aware about the topic of domestic violence - who needed to get involved more closely - and journalists responsible for this kind of press – to help in spreading our message.
That’s why we decided to air our first installation in Palazzo Merulana (one of the most appreciated museums in Rome) and to invite our targets. The installation has instantly made an impression on institutions and media. Allowing us to recreate it into universities, museums and, shortly, the Senate of the Italian Republic; becoming an instrument for public awareness.
Execution
We recreated the bedroom of a young victim of “witnessed violence”, with the aim of bringing his traumatic experience to life. Entering his room, visitors understood what the child heard and felt every day with a series of details, reconstructed with the help of children psychologists.
However, it was only by sitting at the desk that visitors entered the most profound part of the experience. In fact, thanks to bone conductor devices hidden inside the child’s desk, a binaural audio track, was transformed into waves and transmitted through the elbows of the visitors, making their bones vibrate to reach the palms of their hands.
Turning every slap, every scream, and every insult of the recording into an intense, real physical sensation.
The installation was presented in Palazzo Merulana (one of the most appreciated museums in Rome) and recreated into universities, museums and, shortly, the Senate of the Italian Republic.
