Description
After a natural distaster, within the bounds of a relief camp a young girl tries to escape the anguish of men pursuing and following her through the darkness. As she stumbles and runs through the wilderness, fleeing for her life, she finally finds safety in something as simple as the solar lantern inside her tent.
With the hope that one woman's story, told in darkness and shadows will cast light on the fact that something as basic as a solar lantern can help reduce the risk of sexual abuse, domestic violence and threats to women in the aftermath of natural disasters.
Coinciding with International Women's Day, UN Women has launched "Leave No Woman Behind" to raise awareness and help people empathise with the dangers women face in disaster and crisis and conflict settings, especially under the cover of darkness.
Execution
I created an audio world of one women’s attempt to get to safety in the darkness of a natural disaster.
Having very little to actually see, I used a combination of bespoke foley and voice artist talent to immerse the listener/viewer in the frighten reality, that many women face, of escaping from dangerous men.
Although she is frightened from the opening second, I have built her rising fear to a high level of terror as she runs from her pursuers. As well as her building fear I added layers of tension building low frequency sounds to create an uncomfortable feeling for the viewer throughout.
Once she makes it to safety the tension quickly falls away as she is finally safe, the music gives a release as well, to finish we bring back the cold wind as a reminder that there are still women in danger, ever day around the world.
