OVERVIEW

Description

If milk was meant to see the light, wouldn't cow's be see through?

Execution

All of the live action plates were captured on location in New Zealand. Measurements, lighting and reflection information was captured on the day of filming and used to light and render the CGI Cows. All of the Cows in the commercial are CG, the animation achieved through key framing and no motion capture was used.

Once the animation was locked we moved into the liquid pipeline where the milk was simulated for each cow. This was then taken through multiple refining processes to ensure that the surfaces were smooth and correct when sliding over the internal glass faces. There were many rendering issues to solve as the combination of light being refracted through the glass as well as being absorbed into the milk is very tricky to simulate. The sub surface scattering of light within the milk was one of the large challenges to overcome. Some of the more creative challenges was making sure that the Cows were believable but also likable and relatable without provoking a "look at those creepy glass cows" response.

A lot of time was spent with the animators refining the character of the Cows, as well as trying many configurations with how we represented the eyes and the facial features. The close up shot of the Bird was also completely CG, from the feathers to the grass the entire shot was created on the computer. When compositing the cgi Cows onto the live action plates, we used a new process called deep compositing which assigns depth data to flat rendered images. This allowed us to place clumps of grass in front of every cows footfall in 3d space, a process that would have been incredibly time consuming without deep compositing.
