OVERVIEW

Background

The Latinx community continues to be one of the most proportionally underrepresented communities in entertainment – especially when it comes to gay and queer Latinx people. In addition, there is a severe imbalance when it comes to representing the diversity of experience and story within the community. Love in Gravity set out to change this by leveraging the format of audio storytelling.

Love in Gravity is the only fictional show focused on the gay/queer Latinx experience – in television, movies and podcasts. According to GLAAD’s 2021-2022 Where We Are on TV Report, there were only 2 characters living with HIV on television. Six months later, there were 0… until Love in Gravity. With this show, we set out to change what that representation looks like – all through stories that make you laugh, cry, and think differently about the queer experience, living with HIV, HIV prevention, and so much more.

Execution

Season one of Love in Gravity is a collection of six original stories about love and the forces we exert on each other – the first time you fell for someone, a high school in Miami, hidden secrets, the 6 train running express through the Bronx, and the complications of family. The six episodes are each written by different gay, queer and bisexual Latinx and Afro-Latinx writers, and the stories are topically expansive – covering things like biphobia, exploring non-binary identities, open relationships, HIV diagnoses, and HIV prevention, to name a few.

Outcome

1. It did some serious heavy lifting in terms of representation. If Love in Gravity was a TV show, using the data from GLAAD’s 2021-2022 TV Report, it would have represented 95% of all portrayals of people living with HIV and 25% of all LGBTQ+ Latinx roles. Across all episodes of the show, 70%+ of the cast/writers identify as LGBTQ+ and 95%+ of the cast/writers identify as Latinx or Afro-Latinx.

2. The show reached so many people… with a purpose. While providing great entertainment, it's specifically designed to reduce stigma connected to the gay/queer Latinx experience and increase conversation around/access to HIV prevention. Each episode had an organic reach of 10M+ and episodes were performed live in LA, Miami, and Puerto Rico to 5,000+ attendees. The podcast also partnered with historic gay bars/LGBTQ+ social clubs and community-based organizations to distribute the content and engage in dialogue connected to the topics.
