Execution

Together with the expert center for dementia we encouraged & launched the distribution of music therapy packs, around retirement homes.

We are the first in the World to have adapted music to people with dementia. The lower tone was required because of the fact that the voice muscles of older people have less power, which makes it very hard for them to sing higher melodies.

The lower rhythm was also required because of the fact that people with dementia can't recall or repeat too many (fast) lyrics.

The songs in the music therapy pack are re-played and recorded in a slightly lower tonality, and lower rhythm. The pack was designed especially for people with dementia can sing along. Since music has an important therapeutic effect on people with dementia,we believe that it is a really great innovation.

Outcome

In the 3 months after Music for Life, 65% of all Flemish retirement homes requested and received a starter’s kit on music therapy.

Future plans:

- the music therapy pack will be re-released (big demand from doctors, experts, caretakers etc...)

- there will be a version for the UK and for France in September 2013

- the music therapy will be promoted at the conference on dementia in Germany in September 2013
