Background

The task was to create a series of dioramas, depicting different uses of semiconductors. They were to range from the ordinary to the extraordinary, but all needed to be physically produced in incredible, super miniature detail. We needed to create one microscopic miracle to celebrate the rest.

The models were so small that they could not be captured with a traditional film camera. We enlisted the help of scientific photographer Stefan Diller who used his pioneering Nanoflight® system to recreate the dynamic camera moves from our animatic, at a nanoscopic level. Thus, giving the microscopic world a sense of cinematic style that has never been seen before in commercial filmmaking.

The result is a ground-breaking live action film celebrating Samsung’s pioneering role in semiconductor manufacturing; featuring 3D-printed models on a nanoscopic scale and captured using a one-of-a-kind scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Execution

This campaign for Samsung celebrates semiconductors: the nanoscopic, unsung heroes of technological progress. Together with microfabrication pioneers Nanoscribe, we used a cutting-edge 2GL® 3D printing technique, based on Two-Photon Polymerisation, to fabricate a series of microscopic sculptures depicting various applications of semiconductors. From everyday moments like playing a video game, to life-saving inventions and space exploration, every microscopic model celebrates a different incredible technology that wouldn’t be possible without the ‘micro-miracles’ that are semiconductors.

Outcome

Although we are not privy to Samsung’s campaign results, from sources accessible to the public it is clear the film has had a great impact.

On Samsung’s YouTube channel, the video has over 13 million views with extremely positive and engaging comments. On their lesser-known Semi-Conductor Instagram profile, the film has received 7.5 million views, the most views for a video on that profile by far.

Within the motion industry it has also been a strong talking point, with reactions to our BTS film being highly positive. Many peers were pleased to see the breakdowns of the microscopic filming process and learn that this had all been achieved in camera rather than with CGI.

The Micro Miracles spot has already been successful in multiple awards. It has received a Spikes silver award, a Creative Review 2024 honourable mention, and it was shortlisted for the British Arrows awards.
