Background

JJ Lin dropped his latest album in December 2015. It was recorded and mixed using binaural audio, and is designed to be listened to on headphones. The entire album is a collaboration and cross promotion with Beats, so Beats chose to feature JJ Lin in China's first Sound Symposium. We filmed and edited a short film of JJ Lin in LA, capturing his creative process, and the idea that how, with Beats, fans can hear his music, just as he intended. That video premiered at the Beijing Sound Symposium in March 2016. We followed up with an online recap video of the Symposium, and re-released the video before the Golden Melody Awards on June 25th, as the album was nominated for 4 awards. When JJ won two GMAs for Best Male Singer & Best Composer, we prepared recap videos for each award, and dropped them online when he won.

Description

From inside the studio, to out, Beats are an integral part of JJ LIn's creative process. They give him a window into how fans hear the music that he composes, sings and produces. In this film, JJ Lin reflects on his latest album, recorded on binaural audio in a variety of different environments, seeking to bring his listeners into each space, letting them hear exactly what he hears, and feel what he feels.

Execution

The video was launched at the Beijing Sound Symposium, before JJ Lin's panel discussion on evolution of the music industry in China and his own live performance. It was released online, and pushed again when JJ Lin's album was nominated for 4 Golden Melody Awards, winning in the categories of Best Male Singer and Best Producer.
