Description

Despite YKK AP's rich resources for innovation, the general view on the window is that it remains the same once implemented into architecture. Innovation was also necessary for the mindsets of people outside and inside of the company. We formed an innovation team with YKK AP’s in-house team and external developers specializing in a mix of hardware and software. The purpose is to make and publicly showcase a “concept model” of windows annually, just like in automobile development.

We named the first round of the concept model "M.W." M.W. is the abbreviation for MODULE WINDOW or MULT WINDOW. Combinations can be changed freely to achieve all sorts of functions. When family member dynamics change, when you start a new hobby, when you want to refresh your mind.

We created an application specifically for M.W., and made it available as an open platform to allow access and usage by everyone.

Execution

You can freely change modules such as illuminance sensor, touch sensor, atmosphere sensor, wind velocity sensor, and camera, that can be implemented into the M.W. window frame to create functions according to your lifestyle needs. You can actualize as many functions as the number of M.W. you have, and add software through open platform.

M.W can be used to detect room temperature, and open and close to cut energy usage. When no one is in the room, M.W. goes into energy conservation mode.

We are currently in the process of developing the retail version of M.W., aiming to make M.W. available for purchase in three year's time.

Outcome

“The Concept Model of Windows 10 Years in the Future” attracted considerable media attention.

Advertising Value Equivalency: 928,263.98 USD

Without relying on advertising, the YouTube video attracted 400,000 views. The general public as well as YKK AP employees regularly visit the showroom in Shinagawa,Tokyo. “YKK AP Concept Model Project” updated not only windows, but also the way of corporate communication.

In addition to prototyping for the retail model of M.W., we are developing a platform for smart home devices to connect all home appliances and create a convenient living environment.

Sales goal for B to C (targets: stand-alone houses and condominiums) sales: 200 million JPY (1.78 million USD)

Cost per unit = 2,000,000 JPY (17,800 USD)

Target number of households: 100

Sales goal for B to B (targets: hotels, hospitals, schools): 600 million JPY (5.34 million USD)
