OVERVIEW

Background

Young black are 3x more likely to be shot by trained shooters than their white peers. A disturbing potential correlation: the most popular target for shooters to lean to use their firearm is a black silhouette. What if unconscious bias is deadly? “No more black target” is an artistic project to raise awareness of the danger of unconscious bias.

The campaign seeks to eliminate the use of black targets, forever. In shooting ranges, in permitting and instruction environments, anywhere someone is learning to use a firearm.

Description

The project gathered more than 50 artists, including Cypha, buttsup, Rex chouk, Julien Calot, Denton, savior elmundo, Thomas Raillard , sr.lasso , brolga , hektad, dizmology...

The targets have been replaced & painted over w/ artistic interpretations that turn the menacing black targets into beautiful, colorful, & optimistic art. We turn a canvas for violence into a canvas for hope. We hack a symbol of violence w/ the power of art.

Rather than a long exposé, we wanted to reach people’s emotions.

Launching on the 25/01 in partnership w/ the New York Society for Ethical Culture, the campaign is an artistic project to raise awareness of the danger of unconscious bias & how it may be perpetuating gun violence against young black males.
