Description

A boy and a girl live across the street from one another in a Mexico City apartment, and through a series of distant interactions they fall in love over the course of the video and decide to bridge the divide to meet each other. The Ozo camera, strung up on a line between their two rooms, would journey back and forth, providing a look into their lives from each of their unique perspectives as the romance blossomed. In the alleyway below, a street party would assemble, and OneRepublic who almost act as the stories ‘narrator would take the stage to play “Kids,” The single off their fourth studio album Oh My My.

Execution

The band first primed audiences with 2D version of the story in a traditional music video, which allowed fans to see the story from the artist’s perspective, as well as tease up viewers to the VR video coming soon. On September 27th, the VR video rollout began. The process included releasing the more immersive version on various headset-friendly platforms like Within (Founded by Milk), Littlstar, and Oculus, as well as more accessible versions like a 360-degree video on Facebook, where One Republic has some 12.8 million fans.

Outcome

In the two weeks following launch, the full VR version accumulated more than 150,000 views across platforms, while the 360-degree version racked up some 1.7 million views on Facebook, and 1.1 million on YouTube. Plus, as soon as the video hit the market ,the band’s label, saw an uptick in sales of special “kids” branded Google Cardboard kits (an entry-level VR viewer) and are hoping that merchandise – aimed at OneRepublic super fans, but also usable for viewing other VR videos – will bring more people into the space, and fuel demand for more content.
