Description
The Potato Eaters Experience, a year and a half in the making, recreates the experience of Van Gogh making the Potato Eaters painting. A web experience, according to the Manifesto: 2001(Erasmus), is bound by the following rules: 1) It only uses primary texts, in this case Van Gogh’s letters written to his brother Theo. Interaction is personal and in the first person. 2) Primary navigation is sequential to develop a story (or stories) and evoke an emotional experience, not hierarchical to explain a position(s). 3) It requires user interaction to develop the story, and must make demands on the user. Whilst it might use Flash as an enabling technology, it is not a Flash animation - that in effect uses interactive technologies in a passive way.The central panel of the Potato Eaters Experience contains a sequence of drawings by Van Gogh that slowly, unnoticed morphs towards the final painting. The edges of the screen contain the interactive elements. To progress to the final painting, the user interacts with different elements of the experience that match the choices that Van Gogh made in creating the painting. Thus, the user 'becomes Van Gogh', whilst hypnotically working on the individual elements, finding that a masterwork emerges almost imperceptibly in the process.
