Description
For the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ upcoming museum, we created a 30-second spot to air just once during the 90th Annual Academy Awards. Using only footage from Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror film The Shining, plus a few key VFX additions, we created a folksy local ad for the film’s iconic Overlook Hotel. In the spot, the staff repairs axe-splintered doors and mops up blood as a cheerful narrator speaks about the hotel’s amenities, including their famous garden maze (pictured with crime scene tape across its entryway). The phone number at the end of the spot was a real functioning number; those who called were treated to a hold message from The Overlook’s front desk full of funny, twisted insider references to the film. A few lucky callers even got a real person from the Academy giving out access to next year’s red-carpet events and other Oscars swag.
