Description

The smartphone occupies a strange position in our lives. People enjoy accessing social media systems and playing games on their smartphones. But many of us seem addicted to smartphones use and risk spending too much time hunched over our screens, even when we’re eating or on the move or trying to get to sleep, leading to health problems like stress, insomnia, eye strain, and dangerous driving. Smartphones are seen more and more as unhealthy. Panasonic decided to turn this around by introducing a new app that helps people use their smartphones to get their bodies more in sync with health. Using a smartphone, users can now access high-level exercise training, then measure the impact on their health, share physical condition data captured by healthcare products via their smartphones to a private Cloud.

Execution

Panasonic collaborated with the Adidas Training Academy to create a free smartphone app offering two key benefits. First, app users can access exercise four kinds of videos created by world-leading trainers (gym and running, yoga, performance, dance), participating in high-level training anywhere, anytime. The second benefit is a fun way to measure and monitor conditioning: by bringing their smartphone near their scale or exercise counter, users can transmit conditioning information such as weight and body fat via the app to a private Cloud and display that information in easy-to-understand graphs, maintaining and building motivation to stay in shape.

Outcome

The download count has already reached 150,000, and 95% of those who have bought the Panasonic healthcare products (exercise counters) linked to the app are active app users. The app has scored 4.1 on Google Play and has received many positive reviews. It’s been ranked 1st among health apps in Japan many weeks in a row. The training videos have been viewed 300,000 times. Events are being planned throughout Japan around the fun the app provides and many people now use their smartphones to get healthier!
