We started by inviting people from various industries: the arts, literature, science, music - and asked them to create something using a pencil. During the first 4 weeks we received over 35+ pieces from notable names.We then developed an online auction as part of the official Pencils of Promise site, which was integrated with eBay and allowed us to display contributor artwork, descriptions, and bios.
Alongside the auction pages we also created a shop where visitors could buy their own Pencils of Promise with a view to creating their own work only using a pencil.
Outcome
One measure of our success is the names we attracted to the campaign - from Mariah Carey, Hugh Jackman and Coldplay, down to Katie Couric, Chelsea Clinton and Shaquille O'Neal. These names are a testament to the impact 'Made with Pencils' has had and how many people it reached through the contributors' own fan bases.Our lowest artwork sold price is $250 (enough to educate 10 kids) and highest $1,675. The campaign raised enough money to build an entire school in the first 8 weeks of it running. Media coverage was extensive - from Huffington Post, to EW, and Creativity.
