Description

Despite clear scientific consensus, people are increasingly confused about the reality of global climate change. Much of the information contributing to the confusion has been funded by Big Fossil fuel, and perpetuated by the media. Reality drop was designed to give users direct access the latest climate change news from hundreds of online resources, along with the science that directly pertains to that news, and the means to socialize it and spread climate change reality.

Execution

Former US Vice President, Al Gore has more than 2.6 Million followers on Twitter. Combine that with another 100,000 or so on Facebook, plus another 250,000 engaged, active followers of Mr. Gore's Climate Reality Project and it's a powerful example of how one individual can become his own media channel.

Thus far this Al Gore 'channel' – with all its PR muscle, a network of more than 3,000 trained Climate Reality Project presenters and a social reach that extends exponentially – has been the sole channel employed to promote Reality Drop.

Mr. Gore announced the launch of the site during the 2013 TED Conference in Long Beach, CA. And in the days following, more than 123 news outlets picked up on the story.

Reality Drop is an ongoing collaboration between the agency and the Climate Reality Project, for which we are currently planning more media support and site refinement.

Outcome

Reality Drop has performed very well. We define a 'drop conversion' as a user seeing a Reality Drop in the comment thread of a news article, on Facebook, or on Twitter. We've had visitors from 86 countries coming back from over 53,000 drop conversions. This is showing that the content of our Reality Drops are compelling enough to merit investigation and consideration. Our users have dropped on over 2,700 news articles from over 120 news outlets around the world.

With over 53,000 drop conversions in less than 30 days, we've created a vehicle for igniting a grassroots movements.
