Description

The design concept of JTBC is literally derived from the channel slogan, “Coloring Your World.” The colors of the JTBC logo symbolize the company’s credo which defies any representation of certain color or narrow point of view. However, in the past, the JTBC logo was considered mundane due to its only emphasis on the main colors, and thus, a new graphic identity system was created. In this new identity, the geometric shapes of the logo are conceptually paired with the four distinct genres of the channel to represent diversity, and still maintaining the color identity of the logo.

Execution

JTBC introduced a tone-on-tone concept to overcome problems of the previous color system. Color-based segmentation was used to improve readability, and also, a new color modulation system was created. In this design module, a 16:9 ratio TV screen is divided into squares of the same size, and within these squares, color units within the squares are given modulated movements. This resulted in efficient use for all departments to maintain a fluid and unified look. The main strategy of merchandising and product design was to avoiding design clichés and overuse of the logo on print materials. Thus, after running series of color print tests and mock-ups, JTBC identity graphics were effectively applied on the products. Also, the new lobby café, media wall, and the PR center all wear the JTBC design identity to show personality and character of the JTBC's unified brand design.

Outcome

In 2015, JTBC ranked first among general cable TV networks in a performance evaluation by the Korea Communications Commission, scoring 86.53 points out of 100. The company earned 183.18 points for content (quality of programs, record of awards, self-screening, reflection of viewers’ opinions), 184.71 for programming (audience board, program evaluation including those for children and disaster relief) and 237.80 for operations, totaling 606.69 points out of 700.

Furthermore, in an evaluation conducted in December, 2015, by the Media and Future Institute, JTBC ranked first in reliability and usefulness and second in fairness among 15 major media outlets. JTBC was also highly popular among various age groups, especially among viewers in their 20s to 40s. These remarkable outcomes show how influential media JTBC is for Korean TV viewers.
