Background

Similarly to music’s ever-evolving zeitgeist, the Rock Hall team realized it was time to update its image to ensure the institution remains relevant, by broadening its audience to include younger generations, and staying in the spotlight year-round beyond the induction ceremony.

Idea

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame exists both to honor music greats, and inspire new greatness. Affectionately known as Rock Hall, the institution encompasses a museum packed with exhibitions and ephemera in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as awarding popular music’s highest achievement, by inducting megastars into its coveted hall of fame during an annual ceremony. The Rock & Roll spirit is an essential part of the updated brand: original, bold, daring, dynamic, authentic, powerful—all delivered through Rock Hall’s new visual identity, which responds to audio cues, and its content.

Execution

This new logo features a custom designed and programmed typeface that reacts to audio cues—its letterforms reverberating in response to sound levels and beats. Also imbued into the brand is a tone of voice that’s eternally cool, never trying to be trendy. This is echoed in visuals that blend an Acid House palette with imagery and videos that feature the music world’s GOATs.

Outcome

The identity debuted at the 2022 Induction Ceremony, which, naturally, doubled as a concert and aired on HBO. The new logo was displayed on the red-carpet step-and-repeat and as part of the stage set, behind this year’s inductees which included Dolly Parton, Lionel Ritchie, and Eminem.

Beginning its new era, Rock Hall continues to expand beyond rock music to celebrate all genres that impact culture, and to recognize the significance of a wider breadth of artists' lifetime achievement that appeal to all ages, ensuring Rock & Roll lives on for many more decades as an idea that's both contemporary and timeless.
