OVERVIEW

Description

A symbolic bike ride from the South Side of Chicago to the United Center reflects the rise of Derrick Rose, from a young kid growing up in one of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods to one of the NBA’s best players.

It features the first-time-ever commercial narration of rapper, writer and actor Tupac Shakur, as he reflects on the thinking behind his poem “The Rose That Grew from Concrete,” a piece that celebrates those who achieve success through difficult circumstances.

Execution

OPEN ON: A YOUNG ATHLETE SITTING ON HIS BED, STARING INTENTLY AT A BASKETBALL IN HIS HANDS. IT’S EARLY MORNING. THERE IS SPORTS EQUIPMENT SCATTERED EVERYWHERE. THIS IS AS MUCH HIS BEDROOM AS IT IS HIS WEIGHT ROOM, HIS ESCAPE FROM HIS GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES.

CUT TO: OUR YOUNG ATHLETE ON HIS WAY OUT THE DOOR. HE WALKS INTO HIS KITCHEN AND GRABS A POWERADE BOTTLE, PUTS IT INTO HIS BAG AND WALKS OUT OF THE HOUSE.

CUT TO: OUR YOUNG ATHLETE RIDING HIS BIKE AS HE MAKES HIS WAY THROUGH THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO.

SUPER: ENGLEWOOD, CHICAGO

WE BEGIN TO HEAR OUR NARRATION FROM TUPAC SHAKUR.

VO: You see, you wouldn't ask why the rose that grew from concrete had damaged petals.

CUT TO: HE CUTS DOWN AN ALLEY TOWARD THE ELEVATED TRAIN TRACKS.

VO: On the contrary, we would all celebrate its tenacity.

CUT TO: HE BIKES PAST A LINE OF MODEST ROW HOUSES.

VO: We would all love its will to reach the sun.

CUT TO: OUR YOUNG ATHLETE CUTS ACROSS AN EMPTY LOT.

VO: Well.

CUT TO: HE TURNS A CORNER AND CONTINUES BIKING DOWN THE STREET.

VO: We are the roses.

CUT TO: HE HEADS UNDERNEATH AN OVERPASS.

VO: This is the concrete.

CUT TO: OUR YOUNG ATHLETE ARRIVES AT HIS DESTINATION. IT’S THE UNITED CENTER, HOME OF THE CHICAGO BULLS.

VO: These are my damaged petals.

THE CAMERA FOLLOWS HIS GAZE AS HE LOOKS UP AT THE STADIUM WITH A SENSE OF DETERMINATION. HE GETS OFF HIS BIKE AND WALKS TOWARDS THE STADIUM.

VO: Don’t ask me why.

AT THIS POINT WE MATCH CUT TO DERRICK ROSE WALKING DOWN THE UNITED CENTER TUNNEL INTO THE ARENA.

VO: Ask me how.

DERRICK STOPS WHEN HE REACHES THE COURT AND HAS A MOMENT WHERE HE REFLECTS ON HOW FAR HE HAS COME. HE TAKES A SIP OF POWERADE.

SUPER: WE’RE ALL JUST KIDS FROM SOMEWHERE

SUPER: POWER THROUGH
