Description
Reduce the increasing number of children being killed or seriously injured at school crossings.
Execution
The final design was a simple answer to a complex problem.
Our on-road child symbol design;-vastly improves school crossing visibility for drivers.
-acts as an emotional deterrent for drivers to slow down.-allows drivers to keep their eyes on the road ahead rather than diverted to roadside signage.-uses no words and therefore eliminates language barriers to understanding.-low cost implementation.-helps children visually understand the correct location to cross the road safely.
Outcome
Government research trials of the design using on-road tube speed data showed a significant decrease in approach speeds relative to control sites in the evaluation.
Vehicles exceeding the speed limit by 10km/h, 20 km/h and 30k/h all showed significant reduced speed outcomes.
Therefore the incidence of serious and fatal accidents at school crossings has the potential to decrease dramatically, or put simply, this design can save children's lives.Teachers and parents were also very supportive of the design at their local schools.Encouraged by this research, our goal is now to take the design to every school crossing, everywhere.
