Description
: By using one of India’s most impactful and far reaching mediums – Radio, we did the unthinkable.
We created the world’s first radio show for the hearing impaired. Giving them a voice through radio, we created a radio show that was not heard but seen by 1 billion people in India.
Execution
Implementation: We conducted the show by bringing the radio to the school, by setting up a remote radio station at the Hellen Keller's institute. The RJ conducted the show live with the help of sign language interpreters at the school. For the first time hearing impaired students experienced radio and in turn voiced their dreams, aspirations and concerns to the general public.
Time Line: The activity was started to celebrate the world day of the deaf, but because of the far reaching impact, has been continuing as sporadic capsules even today.
Placement: We selected the prime time radio slot to make an impact. The morning show was hence used for this activity.
Scale: The show was broadcast live across 27 states in India. More than 30 lakh listeners were tuned in for the show.
Outcome
The immediate outcome of the show was that, a student was selected to become the world's first hearing impaired RJ. She got herself a show to keep the positive movement going. The government took notice and made public announcement for a policy change, to make the system for inclusive for these children. Celebrities and corporates vouched to change their hiring policies.
Hellen Keller's Institute got a significant rise in volunteers post the activity. Many of their senior students got posted in corporate.
