Description
We did something better than asking for hand outs. Instead, we opened +SEN a massage centre wholly operated by blind masseuses with specialised training. And, in doing so, we ourselves created jobs: Jobs for those who have a highly developed sense of touch. This was a profitable, sustainable business for the foundation.
Execution
The Light Foundation is one of the 30 most important foundations in Chile. Its mission, through Santa Lucía School, is to educate, rehabilitated, and train blind people to perform crafts and work where they can use in their favour the other, overdeveloped senses. Their massotherapy training courses, are an example. With these courses they aim at achieving work inclusion for blind people, but most importantly, to provide blind people with a sense of self esteem and autonomy by having their own, steady job.Based on the analysis of a market that lacks in job opportunities for blind people, we developed a new business concept. +SEN, Massages and Senses, a franchise in places where the senses are enhanced.
Outcome
Up to date, 3 massage centres were opened. 22 blind people have a job at +SEN. 12 people are currently being trained to have job opportunity. There are new franchises on the way. Media Coverage equal to more than US$150,000 5,593 massages have been served, generating an income from sales of $80,000,000 (US$160,000). +SEN won the UC2011 'Emprende UC' Chile's most renown contest for new businesses and entrepreneur. This project has created a business model that guarantees, through a +SEN franchise mode, the future inclusion of all graduates from the massotherapy training course offered by the Light Foundation.
