OVERVIEW

Execution

Geopursuit is a lateral-thinking-based adventure game on Google Earth. Players were given six challenging clues over six weeks, and in order to solve them, they had to learn about some of Shell's most spectacular innovations. The objectives of Geopursuit were two-fold: First, to positively influence perceptions of Shell as an employer; second, to generate a database of contact details for students in Shell’s target universities.

Shell has a UK recruitment quota of c. 250.

Outcome

Geopursuit attracted students who enjoy lateral-thinking problems and relish the prospect of a challenge - exactly the qualities Shell looks for in graduate recruits. All clues were based on real stories about Shell innovations, so through playing, students would learn more and more about what makes Shell an exciting place to work. Google said they'd never been approached with an idea like this before, and currently use Geopursuit as a case study for creative treatments using Google products. We targeted eight UK universities, but received entrants from over 170 institutions in 22 countries. 15,000 unique visitors to the site, and thousands of Geopursuit postings appeared on internet message boards and Facebook groups. Almost 5,000 students registered – over 1/3 asking for more information about Shell careers (against a recruitment target of 250). In our exit survey 71.6% said they're more likely to apply having played the game.
