Description
A free WiFi signal that’s actually a victim’s cry for help.
We used an existitng technology in a way nobody had before. To deliver a message about an issue nobody was talking about.
Signal for help is a public WiFi signal that hijacks your phone to deliver a shocking message about abuse, then arms you with a tool to help fight it.
We broadcast the signal in areas around the UK with the highest rates of domestic abuse. Specifically targeting the places where abuse was being ignored the most.
Execution
We hacked Wi-Fi routers to hide a secret message about abuse.
Then broadcast the signal in areas of the UK with the highest rates of domestic violence.
The Wi-Fi appeared as an unlocked signal named: ‘Free_Public_WiFi’ to make people select it, but when you connect it instantly takes over your phone with a dramatic short film that is made to feel like a Facetime call from a woman begging for help.
You feel like you’ve been personally connected to this woman as you witness a scene of violent abuse which ends with the statistic ‘Only 16% of suspected domestic abuse is reported to the police’ and a call for people to save the non-emergency police number to their contacts so they are armed to report abuse in the future.
We are continuing to run the activation for as long as Bede House feel it is effective.
Outcome
Targeted 18 locations.
Broadcast the signal to 700,000+ people.
Shared the film socially to an audience of over 20 million people.
30% of people who completed the experience added the number to their contacts and are now armed to report abuse in the future.
Featured in 2 national newspapers and numerous online news publications such as UNILAD, Diverse and Creativity.
