Description

Despite a historic, unprecedented 108-year World Series drought, players and fans of the Chicago Cubs never lost the belief that someday they would see their team once again become champions. In “Someday” we follow a young baseball player at a local ballpark as he dreams of a Chicago Cubs World Series title. He acts as both an announcer and player while jumping between pitching, batting, and fielding to will his hometown team to victory. The kid is the embodiment of the unwavering belief and passion of the team and its fans—the spirit that helped them win it all. The film ends with the kid tossing his hat into the air in celebration as legendary Cubs announcer Harry Caray exclaims, “Holy cow, the Cubs win!”

Execution

It’s Game 7, bottom of the 10th. The score is Cubs 8, Indians 7. The Cubs are in the field and need just one more out. Kris Bryant grabs a grounder and fires it to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, scoring the final out in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. Bryant immediately heads for Rizzo, and they embrace as the Cubs swarm the infield. After a few minutes of celebration coverage on Fox, Nike joins Chicago’s celebration, airing the first spot after the victory—a powerful and triumphant statement on behalf of the team, the city, and the fans everywhere to finally say goodbye to “someday.”

Outcome

Game 7 of the 2016 World Series was the most watched baseball game in over 25 years and the most watched sporting event of the year (behind the Super Bowl). And Nike was the first advertiser to celebrate the Cubs’ victory with the 65 MM fans watching across the nation.
