OVERVIEW

Description

The release of Spectre marks the unveiling of another iconic James Bond Opening Title Sequence directed by Director Daniel Kleinman who has created 7 of the last 8 title sequences for the 007 franchise. The visual masterpiece was created to begin this epic picture, to mirror and symbolise the themes of the film including the Spectre symbol, the octopus, symbols of danger, action and a focus on love, relationships and sensuality such as fire and nudity and yet also include the ‘staples’ we have come to recognise in James Bond films: girls, guns and the occasional skull, to remind us of, and pay respect to the heritage surrounding the film.

Execution

Director Daniel Kleinman was called upon for the 7th time to create the main title sequence for 007, this time Sam Mendes’ Spectre; bringing his years of past experience on Bond to deliver a new narrative and sequence for 2015. Once the script had been read, Kleinman started concepting visual ideas. As with most Bond films there’s a theme that runs throughout so it’s important the ideas and visuals are narratively driven try to find the right visual metaphors. Daniel heard the track (Sam Smith's ‘Writing's On The Wall’) reasonably early - not a finished edit, but enough to help inspire ideas.

The creative process spanned almost four months and involved a broad team of VFX artists at Framestore who worked closely with Kleinman to define the images, style and tone of the sequence, which are based on the script, the song and the iconic imagery associated with the films.

Outcome

The film itself was released to cinemas in it’s native Great Britain on the 26th October, grossing £41.7 million in its first week, making it the biggest U.K. debut in history. The opening title sequence was met with critical acclaim on social media and with dedicated features in Vice Magazine, Art of the Title, Digital Spy and The Hollywood Reporter. Sam Smith's Writing's On The Wall, the song to accompany the sequence also made history by becoming the first Bond theme to reach number one in the UK.
