Execution
To accomplish this feat, we adapted HTML5 technologies using an experimental framework called threeJS—an approach that has never been done before in a mobile web browser, especially not to a nationwide scale. Not only that, we also incorporated Facebook personalization and the ability for users to control the 3D worlds using their phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope.
In order to resonate with the broadest audience, we chose to recreate three classic dream scenarios: being chased down a dark alley, falling through the air and even showing up to school in your birthday suit. Seeing what your phone dreamed during the movie was simple. Text in a code and you get a link back that takes you to a mobile site that houses each experience.
To ensure these worlds resembled best-in-class video game design, we worked with a creative team to build the virtual dream environments using Cinema 4D modeling software. Once complete, we then deconstructed the environments, texture-by-texture, and handed those assets over to the development team. The developers took the pieces from the modeling software and began to rebuild them with CSS3 using threeJS as the framework—a formula that allowed for a first-person perspective of each storyline and control of the dream worlds.
The end result of these efforts is a collection of rich, interactive 3D worlds that make you feel as if you’re actually in the dream. And the best part is that it’s all only a click away on your mobile phone—something that’s never been possible before.
Outcome
Right now, the Sprint Cinema dream experience pushes the capabilities of current mobile browsers to the limit. As phones become faster and more powerful, these types of experiences can become even more real and immersive. Imagine feeling like you’ve been transported to another world, just by looking at your mobile phone.
To date, the Sprint Cinema campaign has garnered 1,545,097 users, 476,333 dreams viewed, with 5% of viewings resulting in shares.
