OVERVIEW

Background

Star Trek Day’s mission was to provide a platform to connect fans of the beloved franchise and give them a memorable celebration for the anniversary of the first time Star Trek aired in 1966.

To achieve this mission, the experience needed to be: international (allowing the community from around the world to come together), innovative (using next-generation technology to seamlessly bring all activation components together), and impactful (leveraging the day to donate to organizations that champion equality, social justice, the arts, and innovation).

Idea

The idea behind Star Trek Day that ultimately came to an interactive event - both in-person & live-streamed - giving Star Trek fans around the world the opportunity to celebrate the day with the characters and talent that have made the franchise so iconic & beloved.

The event featured talent panels, a cosplay contest, live music from Reggie Watts, comedy performances from Brian Posehn, & more - and a charitable component that contributed to nonprofits & paid tribute to late original series cast member Nichelle Nichols, who broke countless barriers for black women in Hollywood.

The global activation also included a first-of-its-kind international stunt, Star Trek augmented reality “Delta portals” placed in 6 cities across the globe. Via QR codes that opened a filter, fans could explore planets, starships & iconic characters based on Star Trek series.

Strategy

Star Trek Day was particularly ambitious in 2022, featuring a multi-platform approach that leveraged star power & exclusive content from multiple Star Trek series, making it accessible to fans around the world in real time - all while working on an extremely tight timeline.

The event was held at the Skirball Center, a cultural landmark in LA and was live-streamed across numerous high-traffic platforms. This fusion of real-world & virtual worlds colliding, thematically appropriate for the sci-fi series, carried over into the aforementioned first-to-market augment reality stunt, which allowed fans to explore the Star Trek universe via real-world installations.

Finally, the event partnered with leading charities that champion Star Trek’s themes of inclusion and diversity to maximize impact. For every fan that tweeted #StarTrekUnitedGives on Star Trek Day, $1 was donated to these organizations.

Execution

Given the event was built upon interactivity, both in-person & online across multiple platforms, it required extraordinary technology & production collaboration to execute. Held live at the Skirball Center in LA, the event was live-streamed on StarTrek.com + 8 different digital platforms - including a live billboard display in Times Square NYC.

Highlights of the event included panels with the stars of all current Star Trek series, live music from Reggie Watts, one lucky cosplay winner to get a live makeover from Emmy-winning makeup artist, James Mackinnon, a comedy performance from Brian Posehn, and videos of celebrity Star Trek fans wishing everyone a Happy Star Trek Day.

Ahead of the event, the physical augmented reality portals were placed in 6 different cities around the world.

Outcome

Star Trek Day 2022 set a new standard for event success, with incredible numbers across all platforms. The live-stream generated 2.44 million streams and 97,000 hours watched. On social media, it gained 128.9 million impressions, 1.76 million engagements, and 22.5 million video views across Paramount+ and Star Trek social accounts.

The event even trended #2 on Twitter, only overshadowed by the news of Queen Elizabeth's passing. Furthermore, the event garnered over 350 press mentions and articles generating over 1 billion impressions from domestic and international press.

Beyond the numbers, the event achieved its mission by connecting the global Star Trek community. It also set a high bar for annual franchise celebrations.
