Description

We have designed a subway map suited to this 3% minority of people with color blindness. First, we enabled people to be able to predict the direction of subway lines by curving the previously straight lines. Using the fact that people with color blindness see a different range of colors from regular people, we then created a subway map with added outlines in complementary colors around the subway lines which would stand out to regular people without being unpleasant to look at while also being clearly distinguishable to people with color blindness. We also added line numbers to every transfer stations so that people could quickly and clearly recognize line information no matter what point they look at. We added regional characteristics as symbols and made the subway map closer to an actual map by reflecting the actual relative distances between stations on the map as much as possible.

Execution

We used programs which enabled us to simulate the perspective of those with color blindness as well as various dissertations to analyse the problem from their point of view, while also consulting actual people with color blindness and deducing problems together. Urban design experts, UX designers and visual designers gathered to complete the design. After creating this subway map which takes people with color blindness into consideration, we applied it to the online subway map service.

Outcome

•Tier 1: The result was an example of public design with noticeably improved information distinction for the 3% of people with color blindness without causing discomfort to the other 97% of people. This has also been an opportunity to promote the corporate brand image of social contribution.

• Tier 3: The publication of the project generated a very positive response, with over 80 reports in the media, 1200 blog postings, and around 25,000 shares on social media. Due to the interest of the mayor of Seoul (the capital of South Korea), we have even begun partnerships with government institutions to provide free portable subway maps for color blindness to actual offline users of the subway system throughout the capital area. Currently, each time a subway line is added, we provide a continuously updated online and offline version of the subway map.
