Description

The federal budget itself is a critical and sensitive public topic distributing an enormous budget of 300 billion Euros. Consequently the draft for this federal budget is already 2700 printed pages strong.

We were challenged to create an online platform that depicts information as simple as possible and as detailed as necessary.

Mainly the BMF wanted to create a transparent data center that you can easily access anytime. Our objective was to depict and edit data details that can be easily reviewed and understood by laymen. Motivating interested people to sort through details and learn more about the budget’s application.

Execution

By concentrating on key contents and applying a highly minimalized design approach we were able to convert 2700 printed pages into one interactive and simplified graphic on an online website.

With the help of HTML5 and responsive design we created a highly interactive and flexible user experience that is accessible on a range of web-based devices. The data visualization results in a simple but engaging and informative user experience.

Outcome

For the first time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany all revenues and expenditures are allocated in one visualization along with the corresponding official raw data. Especially edited with a wider public in mind.

A wide-range of online-clippings, blog articles, press as well as design-focused articles have picked up on this. It was not only positively mentioned by the press and blogging community but also by the broad public.

Hence we did live up to the challenge of creating comprehensive and intelligible information on the federal budget and its complex structure. In addition we created a more modern perception of the topic itself.
