Background
If you want to bring about cultural change, you have to deal with prejudice and resistance from conservative forces.
At first, we met with incomprehension and rejection. But gradually the feedback from institutions and companies became more and more positive.
Against all odds, UN Women Arab States has taken the first step toward a gender-neutral Arabic written language within its four-year Generation Equality plan.
Idea
At a time when calls for gender equality and equal opportunities are being heard around the world, we devote ourselves to a possible solution for the Arab region in this regard. Our contribution: the All-Genders Font, the first gender-neutral Arabic font with a new Arabic sign which makes it possible to include everyone (m/f/x).
Strategy
Almost 60% of university students in the United Arab Emirates are female. But women barely make up 10% of the workforce. The problem is language: In Arabic the masculine case is used by default in terms of writing particularly in the world of work.
The All-Genders Font was introduced on International Women’s Day 2023 with digital job ads, targeted social media and PR activities.
As part of AFSD (Arab Forum for Sustainable Development), we presented the All-Genders Font to the press. We informed companies, founders and social media about the All-Genders Font and its possibilities.
The All-Genders Font is a free font for commercial and personal use. It is also part of the Adobe creative platform Behance and the font platforms Fontdesk and Arabic Fonts.
The first two global players from the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries have already adopted the All-Genders Font.
