Description

Catch a 178mph golf ball in the $250k open-top SLS AMG to demonstrate its speed, acceleration and handling. And achieve a new Guinness World Record.

Execution

This idea – catching a 178mph golf ball in an open-top SLS AMG – would only work if the casting was right.

First, we needed a pro golfer who could drive a golf ball with absolute stop-on-a-dime precision. He needed to be able to hit the ball at around 180mph, placing it in an area about the size of a large desk 275 yards away.

Additionally, he needed to be a young and edgy golfer. An ageing, seasoned pro wouldn't be quite right. As we were trying to reach a younger audience with this film, the pro golfer needed to be someone they could identify with. So, we picked Jake Shepherd, who was a newly-turned pro on his first PGA tour.

The other casting decision was equally important. Who in the world would be able to drive at 120mph past the golfer as he struck the ball, and drive the car with the aggression, control and intuition to be able to catch the ball in the cockpit?

We knew we needed a racing driver, but whom would the public trust and believe in?

We hit upon the idea of David Coulthard. Not only was he the winner of 13 Grand Prix in an illustrious career, but he was highly recognised and trusted as a television commentator for Formula One.

Further to that, we knew we had an interesting tension between the experienced ex-racing driver and the young golfer. These were the ideal two characters to set a challenge that had never been done before. Both were leaders in their respective fields, but what would get them truly excited that we could capture on camera and test them to their limits?

Setting a new world record, that's what: 'the furthest golf shot caught in a moving car'.

Hence, The Catch was as much about the casting as the stunt itself. As David Coulthard said cheekily at the end of the summary film: "Make sure you have a world class golfer and an ageing ex-racing driver, otherwise don't bother."
