Background

Few shows have done what The Crown has with the evolution of its characters, spanning over five decades and renewing the cast every two seasons. To launch the sixth and final season of the series, we wanted to remind audiences of the main characters’ most iconic moments, evoking a sense of nostalgia for the journey that fans have taken with the characters. Margaret was a key character for this, as one of the most beloved in the show.

This edit needed to show fans who’ve watched from the beginning the moments they loved the most for this character, as well as giving some context for audiences who may have dipped in and out throughout the seasons, or were even watching for the first time with Season 6. We needed to drive positive sentiment for the show and make fans want to see where the journey ended for their favourite characters.

Execution

In a piece of work looking at the journey of Princess Margaret from Seasons 1 to 6 of The Crown, key character moments are shown. Margaret and Elizabeth as young girls, Margaret’s affair with Peter and the strain that caused on the sister’s relationship, Margaret’s struggle with living in Elizabeth’s shadow, her relationship with Lord Snowdon, and the lifelong, close but complicated relationship between Margaret and Elizabeth.

Outcome

Our Margaret Royal Progress content outperformed on both platforms it was posted on and was the second top performer of all the campaign content for Season 6 on Facebook, with 74.8k engagements, 3.6k shares and 1.6 million views.

Sentiment on the content was overwhelmingly positive, with commenters discussing how much they’d loved the actresses playing Princess Margaret, how the show had portrayed Margaret’s story, and many were expressing how the telling of her journey led to them feeling even more devastated by her final episode.
