Background
Recently the support for Japan National Football Team is not as exciting as the World Cup's first appearance (1998) , Japan-Korea co-sponsored (2002), but surely there should be a lot of people wanting to support Japan National Football Team.
So we put a wish to deliver the voices of those who support them to the players in an easy-to-understand way.
Idea
Approximately 800 large flags of 4 meters in width were prepared. It was delivered to the whole country, where people wrote "messages of support".
A caravan would deliver those flags for people to write messages, and those flags filled with support would later be collected.
It was all stitched together to make the largest ever flag filled with supporting messages, about 100 meters wide, and delivered as a form of support to players heading to the World Cup.
Strategy
Although it creates a great atmosphere, the number of supporters in the stadium is limited.
There are many people showing support through SNS, but they are difficult to accurately visualize.
The idea was to realize both, by stitching together flags that were delivered across the country to create a single “largest ever supporters message flag”.
Execution
After the final match in Japan just before the FIFA Russia World Cup, as the largest form of support ever, the flag of about 100 meters in width, “the largest ever supporters message flag”, was presented at the sending-off ceremony. Voices of support from all over Japan was gathered in one stadium and delivered directly to the players.
Outcome
People took this project as a personal mission, and it was introduced in 645 media outlets.
Also, there were many reactions on SNS, with 63,632 reactions on Facebook and 263,816 reactions on Twitter.
The biggest accomplishment of this project was how it gave power to the team. It pushed the Japanese national team to produce their best performance in a World Cup to date, almost defeating the Belgian national team to a spot in the quarterfinals.
