Since the heart of this story lies in empathy, the directors decided the best way to really feel that was in the casting choices. They wanted the characters to be as opposite as possible but still be believable that they’d have a meaningful relationship. Age, race and sex all came into play with this decision and they hoped that the cast would subconsciously reinforce the idea that giving is most meaningful when it’s from the heart, regardless of who gives and who receives.
