Description

Making the leap into the luxury car market with the K900 is the boldest statement Kia has ever made. It symbolizes how far we’ve come and how much we’re capable of. And while some may not have expected its arrival, the K900 will make people question everything they thought they knew about Kia.

Paralleling one of the major themes in the Matrix, perception vs. reality, we’re out to fundamentally alter people’s opinion of Kia. We’re going to show them a side of luxury that they’ve never seen before. And, quite frankly, one they never thought existed

Execution

In order to capture the excitement of the original flying sequence from “The Matrix: Reloaded” it took a team of people adding computer generated flying cars, sparks and buildings. We made the buildings by reconstructing images taken on set using photogrammetry. We employed a physics based particle system for the spark effects and recreated on set lighting, for our CG cars with our own proprietary software, repo HDR. Cars were built and animated to fit the needs of the shots.

We created the film’s iconic “bending spoon” by tracking an actress held spoon handle, that was later replaced with a CG version, deformed, animated by our team and lit using HDRs taken on the set.

To recreate the signature look for Morpheus’ glasses we used two different approaches. In some shots, CG glasses were 3D tracked, and reflections were made with projection cards comprised of a 3D car environment and captured running footage. In others we 2D tracked and composited in captured footage of the reverse angles.

Interior and close up exterior car shots were filmed on blue screen with windows removed; backgrounds were shot separately. We keyed the blue screens, added tracked 3D windows, and then used practical exterior plates for the moving footage. Moving reflections were added in and made to look reminiscent of the “waterfall code” from the original film.

We used 2D tracking and composting to add in signs “Lapin Blanc”, “Heart of the City” and “Tastee Wheat”, as easter eggs.
