Description

We created the Uber Eats Food Drive. We hacked our own app, using the native functionality of Uber in a completely different way than it was intended. Drivers around the city carried around meals through the Uber Eats delivery service. We saw this as an opportunity to create a mobile food drive. When people saw someone that they wanted to help with a meal, all they had to do was tap their phone. Within 5 minutes, an Uber driver would show up and deliver a meal to someone in need.

In one day, we delivered over 800 meals to people suffering from hunger in Toronto. The campaign was trending on Twitter and the story was picked up by publications in Canada and abroad. Another legacy from the launch of the program is that Uber Eats is committed to donating any un-sold food from their program to local food banks.

Execution

We launched the Uber Food Drive during Hunger Awareness Week in Toronto. Users received in app alerts and we leveraged the global Uber user base to encourage people to use the app to start a food drive. Anyone with Uber on their phone could help people experiencing hunger at the touch of a button.

On the first day of the launch, Uber delivered over 800 meals to people experiencing hunger in Toronto. And because Uber Food Drive utilizes the native functionality of the app, anyone, anywhere can send a meal to someone who needs one.

Outcome

Over 800 meals were distributed on the first day of the launch. The campaign was a trending topic on Twitter and the story was picked up by publications in Canada and abroad. The campaign turned any mobile phone into a mobile food drive service. To add to the legacy, in addition to meals given to the hungry via consumers, Uber has committed to donate any un-sold food in the Uber Eats program to local food banks and shelters.
