Background

To show the limitless capabilities of Virgin Media's WIFI, the team were tasked with creating a hang-gliding goat. Given there's no way to recreate this in real life, the team had to push the boundaries of CGI creatures to create a fully photoreal goat. Added to this complexity is that the goat is soaring through the sky on a hang glider. With no real world reference, the team had to imagine how a real goat could hang glide and seamlessly mesh these two elements together, creating a memorable and humorous performance whilst looking as realistic as possible.

Execution

The biggest challenge was trying to figure out how a goat would hang-glide and from which part of its body. Getting the harness and the rig right was the biggest technical challenge and making sure the fur responded to both the wind and the harness was crucial. There was a lot of back and forth between the Animation and CFX teams to get this right. The wind simulation had to play into the character of the goat, in particular the goat’s beard. It had to flutter in the wind just right. Painstaking attention was paid to the tiny hairs around the ears and beard to ensure this this was achieved.
